Oatmeal is great for you, but it can taste a little bland at times.  Sweeten it up naturally by adding yogurt after cooking.

Some yogurt tastes terrible, we use Dannon All Natural Vanilla yogurt.  It does have added sugar, but the content is fairly low (33g per measured cup), and the ingredient list is small and pronounceable.

Some other things you can add to oatmeal to make it tasty:

  • Berries - fresh or bought frozen from the freezer section
  • Cinnamon - just a few sprinkles adds great flavor
  • Stevia - A natural sweetener with no calories
  • Walnuts - great source of Omega 3 fats
  • Ground flax seed - adds texture and rich in Omega 3

Oatmeal instead of bread crumbs PDF Print E-mail

Use oatmeal instead of bread crumbs as an extender in meatloaf and meatballs.  Bread crumbs soak up the fat; oatmeal allows the fat to drain off.

Oatmeal is a whole food and great for you.  If you do choose to use bread crumbs when cooking, make your own from a bread lower in sugar, sodium and bad oils.

Using 93% or leaner ground beef also helps and is a healthy choice.
