4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

1 egg yolk

1 cup chopped dates

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

1 cup milk

2/3 cup sugar

 

Step 2:

2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup milk mixed with

1 teaspoon lemon juice or distilled vinegar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 egg whites, stiffly beaten

 

Methods/steps

1. Combine the first 6 ingredients and cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is slightly thickened. 

2. Let cool.

3. Stir in the remaining ingredients, folding in the beaten egg whites last.

4. Pour into a greased 9 inch square cake pan and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
