We live 10 hours away from the Miles Inn and Charlie Boys are one thing we really miss.  One year while planning to head to the Miles Inn for a Charlie Boy and schooner over Christmas, a big storm hit.  Dejected we tried to make our own Charlie Boys, we got close.  This recipe is in no way to take away from the delicious little sandwiches at the Miles Inn.  They are almost as good, but still missing something.  If you are anywhere near Sioux City just go to the Miles Inn for a Charlie Boy and schooner, they are cheap and damn they are good, and I'd eat one there vs. making my own any day.

At a glance
Main Ingredient
a bunch of Charlie Boys

1 pound ground hamburger
1 small onion, chopped fine
1 Tbsp yellow mustard
1 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp Vinegar
1 Tbsp Sugar

In a skillet, add ground hamburger and break up into small crumbles while cooking. When meat is browned, drain off all fat. Add mustard, vinegar, black pepper, sugar and just enough water to barely cover meat in the pan. Cook, at a simmer, until water is all cooked out, about 15-20 minutes.

At the Miles Inn the buns were traditionally steamed, but you can heat them with your microwave. When buns are warm, add a slice of American cheese to the bottom, along with some finely chopped onion, then spoon on the loose meat and add yellow mustard, ketchup, and dill pickle slices. Serve with a chilled schooner of Killian's Irish Red, just like at the Miles Inn.
